Federal Crackdown on Truck Driving Schools
Impacts on the Moving Industry and on Your Wallet
AP Announced
The Associated Press reported today that potentially more than 40% of truck driving schools could be closed because they're not operating in compliance with government rules.
ICE Expanding into Road Safety
This is led by the FMCSA underneath the DOT. This is part of broader pushes by President Trump and his coordinated efforts with ICE as many CDL holders are actually undocumented immigrants. Truck fatalities are up 40% in the past decade -- partly linked to CDL mills (sham schools that do bad training).
If you work in moving, you might get a raise
So what does this mean for the moving industry? It's a great time to have your CDL license. If you're an experienced truck driver, you could be looking for a 10% pay raise in the next year or potentially even a 20% raise by job-hopping.
Biggest Impact on Long Distance Moves
For consumers this slow down in the supply of new truck drivers could lead to substantial cost increase especially for long distance moves given that long distance moves already are in the five thousand dollar range for long interstate moves, consumers could be seeing another thousand dollars of cost passed on to them. In addition, there could be increased delays in getting your possessions moved over long distances.
